January 25, 2007

Good morning! Why do we like to read the Word of God? Perhaps one reason is the unremitting news of violence and hatred in the mainstream media. The latest issue of Newsweek arrived yesterday and this morning I see an essay by a woman who felt great relief when her husband died from an auto accident, more coverage of the violence in Iraq, the kidnappings in Missouri and other places, and a roundtable interview of a bunch of actors. The world will eat it up, I wanted to go right back to the Bible. How depressing our news is these days. In this we look to the Word. What would the world think of the “peace of God which surpasses all understanding”? It doesn’t understand of course. Sometimes in writing about the news of the world, I must step back and think on that peace and let it wash over me. Even the secular folks know how depressing the news is, but they don’t do anything about it. We can spread the Good News, and is it now any wonder that Jesus called it the “Good News”! We know that the world will most likely continue to get worse and that the news may become more graphic in all of its worst aspects. Read the Word of God and rejoice in his Good News. Be a light in the darkness confessing the incredible love of Jesus. Hallelujah!
