Is There Room for Rejoicing?

It's the Friday of Memorial Day weekend! I hope you are keenly anticipating a weekend of fun. A verse I keep in memory is from Paul's letter to the Philippians: "Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say, rejoice!" (4:4) This verse holds a command that is not that easy to follow. Even on a holiday weekend there is much sad news in the world, many deaths to mourn, and the knowledge that many will never choose to believe in Jesus the Christ. We have enemies aplenty and of course the usual stuff that everyone has to face in this world system. However, there is that admonition from Paul: rejoice always in the Lord. How in the world are we to accomplish that?

The key as always for those of us who believe is in the Lord. Alone, we are easily overcome by the cares and sorrows of the world. My strength is of itself insufficient to outweigh the ponderous package of prickly problems that rests on the other side of the scale. The thorns of life are just too sharp for me alone. Praise God we have a Savior who bore His crown of thorns to the grave and rose victorious over Death! Our Lord and Savior also established holidays to help us rejoice in a world fallen into sin. So, do your best and count on Jesus for the rest! Rejoice in the Lord this wonderful weekend!
