The Place of Honor

A man came up to the front door in the customary way, his tool belt firmly hitched up, his shirt buttons buttoned, and name tag straight. A normal day on his job of repairing appliances in homes. However, this home was a bit more upscale than the norm. A butler answered the ring of the doorbell and firmly spoke, "You shall need to use the servant's entrance at the back of the house!"

In our nation this is not common. The repairman faced a choice. Insist on the front door over the wishes of the butler or make his way around back. The flesh is going to be insulted, perhaps insist on a bit of shame. The reborn spirit will rejoice. What a privilege to be called to the servant's entrance.

And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” (Mark 9:35)

To become the servant of all is our calling. Should someone notice our status, they must direct us to the place of honor: the servant's entrance. Surely the world will name it the servants entrance and direct the humble there, but those who are called to worship the name of Jesus will rejoice to be counted worthy to serve. Let the proud enter at the front and insist on the high place. Their time will be brief. We shall be glad to serve Him!

"Thank you," the repairman said, "it is my honor in Christ to serve!"
