Offer the sacrifices of righteousness,
And put your trust in the LORD. Psalm 4:5
On the surface, we might think of the old Israelite system of offering up the goats and calves to be killed for a sacrifice, and that certainly is a sacrifice. However, the scriptures are often timeless in their wisdom and have meanings that apply to us in the church age as well. What could be the sacrifices of righteousness in our age when we do not have animals slaughtered to atone for our sin?
As a sacrifice is to give up something, perhaps we can give up the urge to strike back at someone and pray for him instead. We could give up that desire for revenge and entrust that injustice to God. According to the proverb, we must sacrifice our own understanding and trust in God in all things. This can be quite the sacrifice when we have a lifetime of education and experience to lean on and those things have generally proven reliable as a guide. As the day goes on and we thank God for the rain, you will likely think of other things that we might offer as a sacrifice of righteousness; feel free to share!
Have a great Friday in our great Savior, Jesus!
