And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die. Genesis 33:13
If you or I were faced with one of those Bible trivia questions, "Where is the term, 'overdrive' used in the Bible?" we might falter or even suspect a trick question. In the NKJV we would be correct, but in the venerable King James version we find it used in the verse above. Of course we might be forgiven for thinking of the automotive term which is certainly not in the Bible.
Here in Genesis we find overdrive used as we often feel it. Work in America has come to the point where many feel overdriven; and that is the past participle of overdrive though my spell checker squawks at it. You may even now be attempting a recovery from a week of too many demands in your job. In our verse today we find a tender love and concern for the flock, something our corporate culture might take note of in this age. We take note of that great assertion: My lord knoweth...
Indeed, we find other instances in the Word where our Lord knows how far to drive us in a day. He knows not to quench the smoking flax of our weakness. Tribulations we cannot bear He carries us through. A greater knowledge of our strengths and weakness does not exist than that which is known to our Lord. The bruised reed of our Christian life is tenderly cared for by none other than the Almighty One. The young flock is watched over by the Good Shepherd. You and me are cared for perfectly by our Lord.
And with that, have a restful and enjoyable weekend!
