The Power In Him

Where the word of a king is, there is power;
And who may say to him, “What are you doing?” (Ecc 8:4)

We don't get to question the king? Indeed, we are very much accustomed to questioning our government and our elected leaders. We in this age may not recall what it was like to live in a land where even the hint of questioning the king might lead to imprisonment or death. A king had such power that for him to speak the word was to have the thing as good as done. As kings were human, this power did lead to abuses back in the day. We might well wonder though whether the power was in the word or in the king.

If the power rested in the word, then each time the king spoke power would be going out from him. This would go on until one day a loquacious king might find himself without any power left. However, I suspect that the power is in the king himself, Whether by birthright or appointment or even election, the king holds the power within him and it does not 'leak out' with each royal command. So, how then do we speak of the power of God's word?

You may have run into a person who has read the word of God and gained nothing from it. There exist many such in this world. Yet, we who believe in Jesus gain much from His word and feel the power of it in our very heart. How can this be so? Easy, the power is in the man - in Jesus our Lord. We read His word as though He is speaking to us directly. The power is in Him, and it only comes to us at His willing it to do so. Those who do not believe cannot receive of His healing, cleansing, and motivating power through His word; it is sadly dead to them. For those who believe, the word of God is alive and living in great power: His power, the power of the King of kings.

Blessed be the name of Jesus, Immanuel!
