Getting Started

Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea to Capernaum. It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. John 6:16-17 NASB

There are some mornings when I have no idea what to write to you. In those days it is up to me to start with a prayer and to do those things which get this thing started, like opening the e-mail program, hitting the compose button, and so on. There are other times when I'm hoping the Lord will give me a push, or those times when I'm hoping for an excuse for a day off, and the mornings where an idea is so insistent I can hardly get to the PC in time. Contrary to popular belief, mornings are not so much the same as one might think!

Getting started on those slow mornings is a lot like the disciples sitting in that boat. Jesus had not yet come, and so one disciple might have said, "should we wait all night?" Another might have worried that the Lord had already left without them. In the preceding scripture, Jesus had come upon one of those times when the crowd wanted to force Him into the kingship and He exited the area. The disciples might not have known where their Teacher was at that time. Of course all their doubts were going to serve to get them in the right place for the Lord to work a wonder right out on the cold, dark Sea of Galilee.

The Lord had not left the disciples behind, and they had not waited on Him, but a big sea with its miles of water was no impediment to the Son of God. The Lord Jesus caught up to them as they rowed across the Sea of Galilee and the disciple's doubts grew into big fears. Yet, when the Lord spoke to them, they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and great was their rejoicing in Christ!

There are days when it seems that we have waited enough and must therefore begin the task or journey without our Lord Jesus. And it is on those days when He will catch up to us and calm our worries and fears, which we would not have had to endure had we only waited on Him just a little more or trusted Him more or believed that little bit more, or whatever shortcoming in our faith He wants to address in that day and time. Always He comes to us in our distress!

Fear not! The Lord comes across the dark sea of our troubles and fears,
